Field notes on AI, marketing, and technology in a deeply human business.

I'm Nick. By training I'm a researcher — the PhD kind — and these days most of my time goes to a nonprofit addiction treatment organization in Tennessee, where I lead the science, technology, and data work. That covers more ground than it sounds like: research and outcomes, IT, quality, the marketing team, alumni services. Lately a good deal of it is working out how AI actually fits into an organization whose real work is deeply human.

I have one stubborn conviction about all of it. Technology earns its place when it clears the administrative friction that keeps people from doing the work that matters — the slow, relational work of helping someone recover. It does not belong anywhere near the therapy room or a clinician's judgment, and I'm not interested in pretending otherwise. Build the quiet, durable stuff that gives people their time back. Leave the rest to people.

Outside of that I read widely and a little indiscriminately — more than I'll ever finish. This site is where I keep a few things worth writing down.
